Easy drawings of cartoons are very easy.

First off, if you want to do easy drawings of cartoons, any cartoons, then just trace them off your computer screen.

A piece of cheap A4 printer paper is thin enough to see what is on the computer screen right through the paper, so you can trace it, no problem.

Drawing cartoons is easy because unless you are copying other peoples cartoons in which case you might as well trace them off the computer screen. Then they don’t have to look like anything.

This makes it easy because cartoons are just simple line drawings, usually done quickly.

How many times have you sat down drawing silly faces, with big noses or mouths or ears? That’s all that cartoon drawings are, exaggerations of what already there.

They do not have to be accurate and they do not have to look exactly like anything because they are only suggestions, learning to draw cartoons is easy.

Usually cartoons are just about fun.

This is done with the intention of encouraging you to draw without getting hung up on detail. They are often about drawing jokes and meant to be funny. The worse they look the better most of the time.

This means they can be very easy to draw and anybody can draw their own cartoons, if they can hold a pencil, even my 6 year old son could do it, so I am sure you can.

It is such a fun, free expression when doodling with cartoons. Although I’m not the greatest there is, I enjoyed my completed drawings.

I enjoyed myself when I was drawing these images for this web-page and they are good simple practice for artists to draw – experienced or inexperienced.

Many cartoons employ people as the subject matter, so I did a couple of quick, funny drawings of people for you to look at.

When you draw Cartoons you do not need to draw objects or people the way they exist or look in reality.

They apply a lesser amount of technicality and detailed work, using over exaggerated forms and features. 

Whale and Spam, the names have been left out to protect the innocent.

Simple devices are used for expressing a persons mood or the mood of an event they are things like dark clouds hanging over the head of a character indicating a sad mood or gloominess.

These devices change normal drawings into simple cartoon drawings!

And, of course, expressions play a big role in showing emotions when you draw cartoons!

As a child I used to love drawing cartoons from comics and these drawings became more complex as I got older so my drawings did also and I learned to draw more accurately moving away from drawing cartoons.

I used to copy the characters and I thought I was good at getting a likeness to the originals, drawing cartoons was my lead into becoming good at drawing as it is with many people who learn to draw.

I’m sure those comic books taught me a lot about drawing and helped me learn to read as well by giving me a fun way to practice.

I still look at cartoons in the newspapers and read them for a laugh, I also watch them on TV because they are funny but not serious, bringing light relief.

Giving cartoon drawing a chance will help your drawing as well and I’m sure it will help you to produce some very cool cartoon drawings.

Start looking around you for some ideas and use your imagination to see what you can include when you draw cartoons.

Keep it in mind to overemphasize facial appearances, include some loose scribbled shapes here or there, and soon you will realize you are doing easy drawings of cartoons, that are very easy .

How to draw caricature, cartoon drawings.

Before you begin to draw caricature cartoons, it is best to understand the principles of a caricature drawing, this is a drawing of a person whose features, have been exaggerated and it is usually drawn in the same style, as cartoons are drawn. When people draw cartoon characters, they usually draw them as line drawings in a cartoon style, so this is a good place to start. You might even want to try just copying a few cartoons, to give yourself a feeling for drawing in this style and doing this will give you some great results, quite quickly it will enable you, to get a feeling for it.

Caricature drawings are not just for those who are beginners, many professional cartoonists, make a good living out of drawing caricatures and often use this, as a way of supplementing their income and promoting their skills, in a fun way, you can often see up and coming cartoonists drawing impressive sketches in tourist areas of the passersby and celebrities in a few minutes for a couple of dollars. The caricaturists can often be seen working away their magic at fates and carnivals all over the world, amusing people, but this practice is most common in Europe. It is a fact that we do not all want to be able to draw a caricature in just a few minutes for the most part it is about enjoying the doing a finished product and how long it took does not matter to most of us.

Famous personalities are often exposed to caricatures and cartoons in newspapers or magazine articles. Artists often include props on the drawing to help readers make a connection with the celebrity in question and their caricaturized drawing. Footballers can be depicted kicking a football or a film star can be in a famous scene from a film. Singers can be seen holding microphones or playing instruments, the artist can also choose a minimum for the detailed environment in which the subject maybe sitting in a vehicle or standing on a patch of grass to place them somewhere. It is these little added details that are so important to take into consideration when learning to draw caricatures.

The elements of exaggeration in caricature drawing make them a perfect medium for satirizing what’s going on in current affairs. Images expressed in this way are sometimes created by taking on different aspects of the person’s behavior or personality, as well as the way they look or their appearance. An example of a politician that is regularly seen speaking out of turn can be depicted with a large mouth. An illustrator might even decide to highlight this feature by drawing a politician with their own foot positioned in their mouth, such an example is where the artist as actually thrown in a familiar take on the caricature drawing which describes the person accurately, they have got a big mouth and they are always putting their foot in it.

To discover caricature drawing well the first step to take is to focus yourself on becoming observant at finding peculiarities in other people. You have to teach yourself to be able to pick out their most outstanding, unusual or interesting features so you can exaggerate them in your drawing. Begin with facial features of the person; for example, look for particularly large or unusual shaped eyes, round puffed out red cheeks, peculiar noses that might be long, flat, wide, small or big, a pointed chin, narrow or large toothy grin. Many cartoonists often only draw just the face and shoulders a portrait type drawing but others will extend their drawings  to the full body and use other bodily features such as height or lack of it, small, round and fat with these being exaggerated to make them funny looking. This is often seen as more difficult to draw but can help the novice to produce more useful material, making his subjects more recognizable. Taking the whole figure into consideration is probably a larger part of creating the distinguishing characteristics of the person being depicted. So when looking at how you might draw a caricature, you should also consider what other props you want to use to get the most out of your image.

It is most often good practice to start by taking your subjects from strangers in still photographs. There are an infinite number of images that are appropriate subjects that can be found online or in newspapers, beginning with strangers who will not get hurt if you mock them then as you get better with identifying and drawing the main features of individuals you can move on to draw more familiar subjects.

Politicians are good subjects if you had an interest in politics then you could make political statements based on the news in fact the news is a great source of subject material for caricature drawings.

News story lines can give you plenty of subject material to practice how to draw caricature cartoons as satirical sketches.

Learning to draw cartoons

Learning how to draw cartoons is a great place to start drawing, even if you don’t draw that well or you don’t practice much, anyone can draw cartoons, in fact everything we draw when we are children, is in the cartoon style because we draw in line drawings, even if you only draw stick figures they are still cartoons or simple line drawings, cartoon drawing is not really connected in any way, to your ability to draw realistically, in fact it works better if you don’t, as cartoons are usually meant to be funny.

Success at being able to draw cartoons is not based on your ability to draw accurately, so much as being able to convey a message with a simple line drawing because cartoon drawings are meant to be simple drawings, that can be drawn very easily and quickly by the person drawing them, to convey a message, most often a joke or a funny story but not always.

If you are an aspiring artist wanting to develop your drawing skills, then cartoon drawing is a great place to start practicing your drawing skills but in a more relaxed, lighthearted way and many people start out drawing them, in the beginning because as I have said, all drawings when we are children are in a cartoon style.

There is a basic set of principles to drawing cartoons, that enable the person drawing them to convey a message, that is based on facial expression and body language; people really do look down in the mouth when they are unhappy or the opposite when they are happy.

When the mouth is relaxed it tends to droop in the corners, although the example above is exaggerated, this makes a face look sad but the exact opposite happens when you smile, the corners of the mouth point upward because of the muscles pulling upward, this makes a face look happy.

This knowledge alone gives the artist two very different forms of expression, one that’s happy, one that’s sad, making it easy for others to understand the message being conveyed. The eyes also change shape with different facial expressions, again when sad they tend to droop at the outer corners and when smiling, showing happiness they tend to squint, so that the actual eyeballs can hardly be seen.

The direction of the look also helps to convey some meaning, to the expressions we make in cartoon drawings but if you think about it, we do in real life as well and in written words, like when we are feeling up, we relate that to feeling good or happy, when we are feeling down, we relate that to feeling gloomy or sad.

Using these different symbolic expressions, help to convey different meanings with your cartoons, aiding the creation of different messages or meanings in a visual way.

There are a lot more than just these few examples but it should give you the basic understanding, of how to draw cartoons and how they really work but one thing for sure, none of these drawings are difficult, anyone of you could draw them easily. You probably make these expressions yourself, in your daily life and even use them as expressions in your emails, every time you write them to some one, as cartoon gestures.

What drawing easy is about.

Let me tell you of some ways, that you can use, to do your drawing easy, there are a number of different ways, you can do this, one of them is, by keeping your drawing to a minimum.

Perhaps we can call this, the minimalist KISS method, Keep It Simple Stupid-KISS.

Minimalism, is an art form in its own right, just in case you didn’t know but in my brain, I most often consider, that less is more and without getting into any deep philosophy, on this, I often feel that simple is best.  The process used, for all drawing is, construction through sequential building blocks, with each being a step, to the next and so on, to completion.

When shading a drawing, you can keep it to a minimum, by using, the white of the paper, as much as possible and only shading, the darker areas, so as to reduce the amount of work needed, in doing all of the detail. This can be very effective, producing some nice drawings, that are in a style called chiaroscuro, where there are strong contrasts, between light and dark. These where often practiced, by drawing statues and plaster busts, which would be, very light in tone because they would often, be white in color or very near white, making it easy, to keep the shading, to a minimum, only emphasizing the darkest tones.

To make drawing easy, we need to reduce, the amount of steps we take, to get to an end result, so we can do this, in a number of ways. Reduce the drawing, down to use a minimum number of marks, in order to make the drawing more simple. This can be accomplished by making line drawings and examples of this, can be seen in, cartoon type drawings, Bart Simpson, Mickey Mouse characters, are just a couple but there are probably, thousands of others, meaning that simple is just as legitimate, as the complicated.

Another method is tracing because it will reduce, the time spent, on doing a construction drawing and reduce the drawing, to only be made up, of simple lines. This can be a big saving, depending on how much you know or understand about it and your ability, because somebody, who is good at drawing free hand, by sight drawing, can sometimes, draw faster, than they can trace, some drawings. Tracing is also, a very good tool for learning to draw and is, I consider, largely undervalued, under exposed and practiced by many, if not all professionals because when, you do drawing, as a job of work, time is money.

The key to drawing easy is, to keep it simple, less is more because if you consistently draw, in ways that are simple, the harder ones, get easier, as well.

Drawing lines or line drawing what?

Drawing lines, is not quite as simple, as you might think because the weight and thickness, of the lines we make, have an impact, on the effectiveness of our drawings, to add to this, is the hardness of the line, which I will explain later, is also of importance.

The meaning to thickness of line, should in essence be obvious, it means what it says, how wide or narrow, the line actually is, has an impact, on how our brain, relates to that line in context, of what is surrounding it and the tonal value of the line, also has an impact, on what is seen, when I say tonal value, I am talking about how light or dark, the line is in tone.

If you draw a circle, with a wider, darker line along the bottom area, it will look like it is, the bottom of a sphere and will start to look like, a ball shape, rather than, simply just, looking like a circle. This also gives, the bottom half of the circle or sphere more weight because the wider line, is more substantial, especially, if it is also darker in tone, it will attract the eye, giving more emphasis and importance, to it, this also creates the illusion, of light and shadow, that is often used, to emphasize, the under areas of shapes, we draw, suggesting, the shape, is three dimensional.

Please take a look, at the drawings, of the two circles, 1 & 2 below, to see an example of what I am trying to explain, also take a look at, 3 & 4, these lines and circles, have been made with a 5 mm, a half cm, flat pencil, notice how the line varies in width, giving it the look of a twisted ribbon. Number 5, shows, how lines can go, from a hard, definite edge, to a more subtle, less definite edge, that can be used to great effect, in your line drawings.  These different types of line, can be used to create light and shadow, so as to suggest the illusion of form and shape but still maintaining, the quality of being a line, using this, within your line drawing, can start to bring, your line drawings, to life.

In the process of drawing images, we often start out with a basic outline drawing, as the foundation, for learning where everything else goes, in relation to the outline and each other. The problem I find with many beginners and well practiced people alike, is they do not always, understand outlines very well, also as in the case of beginners, they do not understand at all, in many instances.

The easiest way to draw and understand outlines, is by using tracing methods of drawing because when you trace an image, you can only, realistically make an outline, as tracing doesn’t lend it’s self to shading. Tracing also gives you a better understanding, of how pictures work, especially when trying to understand, construction drawing.

Let me explain, by using a car wheel as an example, we all know that wheels are round but they are only round, when we look at them directly face on, because when we turn them, at an angle, they become, more and more oval, in shape.

The correct term to call this oval shape, is an ellipse and is something many people have problems with, when trying to draw them accurately, to find out more about this, please take look at single point perspective and two point perspective, you will find the both helpful.

Get yourself some pictures that you might like to draw and trace them, so as to be able, to take a look at these images, as only line drawings, you will notice when tracing these outlines, that they are most often, not as you might have thought they are.

Doing this, will help you to understand, that shapes are not often, the shapes we think we see and that wheels, are most often not circular but oval, along with many other shapes we see but actually, only think we see. This is because our brains tell us that wheels are round or that a shape is this shape or that shape, when in actual fact, many shapes are not what we think they are because our brains are telling us what we see, rather than actually, seeing what we see.
